Remember

Most nursery rhymes
are about death—
we had to remind
the newly arrived
not to get very comfortable here.

Born in the days
of plagues and roses
all babes had to hear
that last-sleep was near.

But then we grew older,
made sleep a foul fiend,
and shrugged off the wolves
at the door.

It might be good
to sing the old, old songs again.
It might be good for us
to remember.
