We the living
intimidate the dead.

Our too-big movements
and our too-loud thoughts
do boisterously rouse them
from their fretted rest.

But not completely rouse—
for that would mean
that they might become sentient
like ourselves.

No—just enough to needle and annoy.

We can’t have them perceiving
who we are.
