When the Sun

When the sun shines its too-bright face
into the eyes of one who’s starved for sleep
the world seems bright and golden
but all wrong.

He squints
and backs away—
back to his home
(or hole)
with hollow soul.

He longs for light
but cannot bear its gaze.

He longs for night
to open Ovid’s maze.
